Trade Facilitation

Coordinating agricultural sectors and player

As the largest source of income and livelihoods in East Africa and the whole Africa, the agriculture sector has immense potential to drive inclusive economic growth.

However, from agri-SMEs to largescale commercial agribusinesses, lack of access to appropriate and competitive trade financing options remains a key bottleneck.

Sustainable builders coordinate agricultural sectors and player to conduct activities that promote cross border trade in agricultural commodities in foreign markets for commodities impacted by tariffs, including activities that address existing or potential non-tariff barriers to trade.

A key opportunity to transform trade finance in agriculture lies in the provision of enhanced support for warehouse receipt systems. Warehouse receipt financing is a form of structured finance which reduces risks and costs, thereby unlocking access to finance for agriculture traders and other value chain players in the sector, in turn improving the quality and value of the agri-commodities exported. It is also a crucial component for pre-export trade finance for agriculture exporters in emerging markets, as it enables traders to access bank loans based on the value of their warehouse receipts.

Improving Access

Sustainable Builders Zambia’s focus is on improving access by the lower end of the agricultural market to new, productivity-enhancing technologies. This focus has been expanded to include the wide array of technologies, equipment and inputs available in the national, regional or international market that can improve the ability of the lower end of the market to produce, harvest, handle and store agricultural commodities.

In promoting agricultural value chains, Sustainable Builders has established an approach that integrates small farms into markets and increases value creation at all levels. In order for businesses to remain competitive in the long term, it is necessary to promote private sector structures in agriculture, mobilize private funds by means of cooperation between development cooperation actors and the private sector, and ensure access to financing opportunities. However, the basic conditions and intervention by public and private sector actors are often not sufficiently coordinated. The approaches, experience and results of promoting trade and business in the agricultural sector as well as corresponding financing arrangements undergo constant analysis. Based on this analysis, economic approaches are to be taken into account in the strategies.

Sustainable Builders positions and strategies for promoting a socially acceptable, environmentally friendly and competitive agriculture and food sector have been incorporated into national and international processes.
